Below is the Mission Statement from 2003.  It was the 1st and only revision from the original statement.  This is still the  Mission Statement in 2009. Our program has built a strong foundation for development.  We are not a large program, but more importantly a very effective program in developing athletes.  Take a moment to read this statment and then be sure to visit our Alumni page.  Our Alumni page is proof that the Rochester RedWings develops Players.

A Mission Statement With Proven Success

Players in the Rochester RedWings Travel Hockey Program utilize the combination of off-ice and on-ice Athletic and Hockey development and training year round.

** Off-Ice Hockey Skill Development – Athletic Development: (Plyometrics) **
** Weight training programs for age appropriate athletes. **

1) During the off-season, players are allowed to develop and train athletic and hockey skills and techniques in our training facility up to twice per week. When the season begins, once per week in the training facility is utilized until November, then an every other week schedule is utilized. The off-ice training is age appropriate and builds a more confident athlete while developing Agility, Balance, Coordination, Speed, Strength and Knowledge. Weight training programs are available for age appropriate athletes. This is an extensive development opportunity for players looking to advance to the highest possible level of competition. There is no additional cost to the players in our program for hockey skill and plyometric training. There is a minimal fee (gym membership) for the weight training programs adjacent to out training center.

** Each on-ice practice simulates a clinic setting for complete player development. **

2) The on-ice (always full-ice) practice sessions are broken into three phases for each practice. Players begin each practice with an 8 to 10-minute regiment that enhances and sharpens each skating technique, always carrying a puck on their stick while doing so. Still passing and movement passing is also included in the first phase to sharpen and develop eye-hand coordination and actual technique. A complete regiment for goaltenders is utilized during this time. The ice is broken into five sections with players equally divided for tremendous repetition. The execution of the second phase of practice is now crisp and performed with a much more confidant flow. A very large series of flow drills are utilized offering extensive player movement that puts each player in shooting and passing lanes covering all areas of the ice. Every shooting and passing situation a player will face in a game is found in these drills. For goaltenders, every save situation that will occur in a game is seen in each practice. Many odd man situations are used to educate defenseman on positioning and reaction to each, allow forwards to become creative while offering great looks for scoring opportunities and allowing them to execute and gain confidence. Goaltenders are always put in very challenging situations allowing them to gain their confidence while develop their positioning and technique on rebound control. The third phase of practice is used to develop team concepts and systems that each team is capable of achieving. Players are challenged using progressive stages of each system and concept tying each philosophy together. Systems and concepts are prepared to build off of team strengths while concentrating on needs for team development.

Prepare For The Next Level Of Competition

Founder and President of The Rochester RedWings Travel Hockey Program Jay Kirk has been a leader in athletic and hockey player development in the Rochester area since 1996. While coaching at most levels of hockey competition in the Rochester area since 1984, Jay has combined the success and setbacks he has endured during those years to design the Rochester RedWings Travel Hockey Program. This program is geared for extensive player development while teaching a higher level of team system and concepts that every player would need to advance to the next level of play for players in the Greater Rochester area.

Players from all over the surrounding areas came together to form the Pee Wee minor and Bantam Tier II teams. Players from each team have shown tremendous growth during the first season of the RedWings in both player and team development Parents wanted opportunity, challenge and growth for their players. Jay needed a supporting staff of coaches and off-ice officials that would help build and guide the program. The two came together and the program is now ready to grow.

AAA travel players, AA travel players, select players and house level players filled the rosters of our first two teams. The challenge to mold two teams with such a variety of player experience was accomplished through the efforts of many.

Prepare players to allow them the opportunity to compete at the high school level at the earliest possible opportunity is the goal of the program. High school hockey in the Rochester area offers tremendous opportunity for future development and success. Players able to compete at the high school level as freshman or sophomores or even as eight graders can continue to realize and build for future opportunity. Less that 1% of players in the Rochester area are capable of passing up at least one year of high school hockey to play at a much higher level.

Jay has set guidelines of development that are required to be offered to every player in the program. Above and beyond development are encouraged and utilized when possible, but lowering of the high standards set is not possible.

Does this sound familiar to you?

** Twenty player rosters, ALL full-ice practices, 50-second shifts or less as a guide enforced within the program. ** No one player is above the others (all players are coached. and given equal opportunity to succeed). ** An exceptional athletic development program utilized.
High School, Junior and College programs utilize these philosophies and so does the Rochester RedWings Travel Hockey Program. Combined efforts built for success and growth for future opportunity. Realize your true potential; gain the necessary development for the Future.
